In brief: Exam & Biopsy

Getting in to see your doctor is the best first step to a diagnosis.
Often times a physical exam will create some level of "suspicion" or "reassurance", but a definitive diagnosis of benign (good) or malignant (bad) can only be made with a biopsy. Make sure you avoid tanning beds, excess sun, and smoking - particularly if you have a family history of skin cancer. Hope this helps!

In brief: Biopsy

Biopsy is the only way to know for sure.
Your doctor or dermatologist can determine whether or not a given skin spot will warrant the biopsy. If you have a skin lesion which is enlarging, bleeding, or is larger than the size of a pencil eraser , it probably should be checked out.

In brief: Abnormal moles

Change in the color, shape, size of a mole deserve further checking.
Also non healing skin lesions. It you have any of the above, have family history of melanoma, have lot of moles or sun exposure, or just want a good thorough check a dermatologist can do a whole body skin check.
