In brief: Breathing

begin a simple meditation.
take slow breaths and count each one, up to 10 then down to one. every time you think about something other than breathing - redirect your thoughts back to slow breaths and counting. also, set a wake time that is the same everyday - and stick to it; then set a bed time and stick to it; if you are laying there frustrated then get up and read in a dimly lit room for 30min.

In brief: Relax

The more we "try" to sleep the more we wind ourselves up.
Sleep specialists call this sleep frustration. Simple tips can include muscle relaxation or guided imagery. Try also not to force yourself into the bedroom and bed unless you feel sleepy. That way, you won't spend time laying in bed tossing and turning lamenting that sleep has not come. One more thing: turn the face of the clock around.
