In brief: Depends on cause of

If caused by a specific situation, interventions before medication may be better. Examples; too much tv or computer time, eating and exercising too late in the evening, staying up late wrecking sleep quality. Change those behaviors before medcation is used. If it's depression or other diagnosed psychiatric disorders only your physician can say what is good medication.

In brief: Yes

There are many good sleep aids.
First study you sleep habits and hygeine. Avoid napping during the day and refrain or reduce caffiene and other stimulants. Prepare for bed and sleep. Don't eat late at night. Try otc sleep aids first. If needed discuss sleep issues with your pcp. You may need to see a sleep specialist and may even have to have a sleep study. Alcohol/drugs can be a problem.

Sleep aids vary with causes of insomnia. Sleep hygiene measures as noted by Dr Proffitt are first in line, then herbal or over the counter aids with antihistamine properties, melatonin, herbal teas specially used for encouraging sleep are next. When those don't work medical evaluation is in order and the physician will make recommendations based on findings from that evaluation for medication.
