In brief: Maybe not
Lots of things can keep people from falling asleep at night including depression.
Any type of stress can do it, especially when it's not being dealt with successfully. Taking a good personal inventory can help sort out the causes of the sleep problem. True depression has other symptoms outside of sleep problems. Some are sadness, hopeless & helpless feelings, loss of interest & joy & need help.

In brief: Not necessarily
The diagnosis of depression requires that a group of symptoms be present over time, one of which may be insomnia or another sleep pattern change.
However, insomnia can be caused by many other illnesses, or insomnia may be a primary sleep problem that appears all on its own. If a person's change in sleep pattern is bothersome, he should see a primary care doctor and/or a sleep specialist.
