In brief: A benefit plan only!
Dental insurance does not exist.
In fact you will never see it called such in a company's list of perks. They are benefit plans design to dole out limited amount of tax free money ($1, 000-$2, 000 per year. Usually administered by a insurance carrier, the real benefits of having this so called insurance is that dentists agree to reduce their fees in return for being part of an "insurance"network.

In brief: Same as 1963
1963 and 2013 insurance $1, 000 -1, 500 per year. The same for 50 years.
Today most plans still downgrade to silver mercury amalgam fillings. 1963 primitive sterilization, no disposable gloves, no low radiation x-rays, no high speed drills, no white fillings, no suction. Just a spittoon and an old fashioned drill. 1963 mustang $2, 300 2013 mustang $23, 000 & up. Cost is 10 times higher than 1963 car.

In brief: Dental Insurance
Dental insurance is not catastrophic insurance like medical plans.
It usually has a limited coverage maximum each year. It only pays a percentage of the treatment depending on the procedure. It also does not cover all procedures. It provides you some help but you still have to pay the difference. Coverage vary by the type of insurance plan you have. Your dentist can help you understand your plan.

In brief: $$ Assistance
Dental insurance is like medical insurance in that an insurance company, in return for a premium payment, helps pay for some of your dentistry.
Many companies offer them, and are often provided as a benefit of employment. Without insurance, you can still go to the dentist...You are just self insured.

In brief: Helps offset costs
Dental insurance helps the covered patient offset the cost of dentistry.
The insurance plan will have an annual limit of benefits and pay a certain percentage off the fees for many dental procedures up to the annual limit. Policies vary tremendously so one must educate themselves on the benefits payable. Most policies are more of a "maintenance policy" as the coverage is limited.

In brief: An oxymoron...
Better term for this program is a dental benefits.
"insurance", by definition is to cover yourself in case of emergency or catastrophic events. Is getting a dental filling done a catastrophic event? They also set a benefit limit per year, usually $1k/yr, which by the way hasn't changed in 40 years! in 1970s, it may paid for a lot, but in 2012, it is hardly comforting to know your limit is $1k.

Absolutely Correct.

I agree. The benefits are also based on what the Insurance company calls "reasonable and customary" and then usually only a percentage of that.

In brief: Insurance
def: a practice or arrangement by which a company or government agency provides a guarantee of compensation for specified loss, damage, illness, or death in return for payment of a premium. Dental insurance is a policy covering treatment of your teeth and gums and associated problems.
Each policy is different, as are premiums and payments, each being proportionate to one another.

In brief: Supplement
Dental insurance helps pay a portion of the costs for dental treatment.
It sure has changed since i started practice in 1976. Many companies had dental insurance that paid 100% of the costs with no deductibles back then. Now more and more larger employers are opting out of paying for dental insurance of have larger deductibles and limits on what they will pay per year. Such is life.
