Often times, people may react to anxious situations with "hyperpnea" or rapid breathing that is associated with severe discomfort, choking sensation, rapid heart rate sometimes sweating.
If it occurs frequently enough that it is interfering with normal functioning, a doctor may prescribe either benzodiazepines(xanax, valium) or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors(ssri) such as paxil (paroxetine).
