Should men and women train differently to become lean?

A Lean Team. It depends on the objectives of your training. If you're referring to toning, then yes, men and women can train similarly. In fact, both can train exactly the same with attention to form over weight or resistance used. Women and men can use light to moderate weight and high repetitions for a lean and well defined muscular look. Doing it together as a team is also much more fun and motivating.
