In brief: Jump on in

The water's fine! huge enthusiastic yes! swimming stretches and works out your body all over. It's low impact so it's friendly for backs and knees too.
So if you're feeling amphibious, it's a great way to get moving. But most of all, choose exercise that will be fun for you. If you're not inclined to swim, that's okay. You can find something else to do.

In brief: Yes

Swimming is a great way to burn calories and stay in shape.
The water is gentle on the joints but over exercising can cause problems with the shoulders.
