What happens if a membrane grows across the macula? Will surgeons be able to peel it out?

In brief: Distorted vision

An epiretinal membrane (thin membrane that can develop across the macula) can cause distortion and blurring of images that won't be improved by glasses.
When the membrane is severe enough, a retina surgeon can peel it, but this is reserved for cases in which the vision is clearly affected. Many people have erms that are less severe and are monitored rather than treated with surgery.

In brief: Depends

This is a condensation with some degree of contraction of the face of the overlying vitreous, which can disturb the vision causing wrinkling and elevation or distortion of the area of central vision.
It can be progressive gradually worsening vision. Removal can be done by an invasive procedure termed a membrane peel. This has some risk but is recommended when the visiion is threatened.

In brief: Usually

This is called epiretinal membrane or pre-retinal fibrosis.
If the vision becomes distorted or blurred sufficiently the membrane can be peeled by a retinal specialist.
