In brief: Good question
Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability.
Naturopaths use natural therapies, diet, etc to help the body to get in a better position to heal itself. There are schools of naturopathic treatment that are well recognized in the USA.

In the 16 states where they're licensed, naturopathic doctors are required to graduate from an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical school and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination (nplex) in order to receive a license.
They attempt to combine the wisdom of nature with the rigors of science. More info at www.Naturopathic.Org.

Naturopathy is an inclusive activity. Students at their schools learn from an internal coursework, pass exams based on this, and if in a state granting licenses (not all do this) are regulated by naturopaths. There is no external frame of reference and no scientific testing of their knowledge or approach. Look them up on quackwatch.com.

Dear Dr. Bensinger, Could we not say the same of ourselves as MD's -- regulated by MD's? There are research programs at Bastyr, National College, and Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, for instance, to scientifically test their approaches -- plus external ones also. Many of these schools also have MD faculty members contributing to the educational process.

Naturopaths are taught a non-scientific approach to patient care.
Many are charismatic and use their charm to steer patients away from conventional medical treatment. They use unlicensed products with no clinical trial basis to treat according to untested "theory". Licensing is available but carries no qualifications and they have no board exams or testing. Don't waste your time or money

Beware of biased and uninformed opinions and false claims re: safety and efficacy.
A naturopathic doctor is a graduate of an accredited naturopathic medical school. Nds are trained in clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy and more. Visit http://naturopathic.Org for more info on curriculum, practice, and licensing.

Contrary to what Richard Bensinger says, Naturopathic doctors most certainly are taught a scientific approach to patient care. Also, many NDs are not at all charismatic, lack charm, and work with conventional medical treatment when that is in the patient's best interest. I have no idea what he means by 'they use unlicensed products' unless he's referring to FDA approved pharmaceutical products, in which case, again, he is misinformed. Lastly, he is also misinformed regarding licensing of NDs, as licensing is a rigorous process, only graduates of Dept of Ed recognized schools may sit for boards, (yes, there most certainly are board exams, the NPLEX) and in most states where NDs are licensed, they must acquire many hours of CME to remain active. Clearly, Dr. Bensigner has very little knowledge of naturopathic medicine, and has formed an opinion based on emotion rather than facts. In brief: Unfortunately...
Drs pizzo and bensinger have answered.
In addition their therapies not only are unproven for efficacy, but never tested for safety. Buyer be ware. As for dr kirshners comment about uninformed and biased opinions, which part of unproven for efficacy and safety is not clear to him.Just because something is said to be natural, it still needs to be held to a safety and workability standard.
