My ears twitch a lot. Is this normal? Is it just a normal spasm?

In brief: May be normal

Twitching of an ear or eyelid, which happens in normal people, is called myokymia (an involuntary, spontaneous, quivering of a few muscle cell bundles within a muscle).
Myokymia starts and stops spontaneously. It can last a few minutes to a few days. One should see his primary care doctor, plus an ear or eye doctor, if such symptoms persist, keep recurring, or are combined with any other symptoms.

In brief: Ear spasms

There are 4 muscles that connect to the ear that can make it move if it spasms.
Most of the muscles are rudimentary and do not work for most of us. If this is a real problem the muscle can be injected with Botox or a mild muscle relaxant can be tried. In extreme cases, the muscle can be divided with a little incision. See your ent.

Stan Laurel could wiggle his ears quite dramatically and used the trick to great effect in a few of Laurel & Hardy's two-reelers.
