In brief: Inflammation
Alt is an enzyme produced by the liver. When it is elevated it signifies liver inflammation which can come from multiple causes, the aasld-american association of the study of liver disease considers a normal alt to 19 or less in a woman and 30 or less in a male.
Alt numbers higher than this again means there is liver inflammation.
