In brief: Basic Life Activity

The short answer is room and board.
But not at all limited to that. They also provide assistance with toileting and bathing, social interaction with staff and other residents, assistance with taking medication, they should also offer physical, & occupational rehabilitation, and spiritual support.

In brief: Care & comfort

These days most people enter the nursing homes when they cannot function physically in the community or have become a safety risk to themselves or the family.
Most nursing homes provide the care & comfort required by these patients & sometimerespite for the caregivers. If the conditions are relatively mild -assisted living facilities can often help also.
