In brief: Red blood cells

Anemia happens when you do not have enough red blood cells and hemoglobin.
It may be a production problem in the bone marrow or you may have chronic blood loss. Iron deficiency is one of the main causes but there are others: vitamin b12/folate deficiency, chronic disease, genetic conditions, certain medications, toxins, etc.
