In brief: Turbinate

Turbinates are in the nasal cavity.
There are typically three. Best way to visualize is that they are stairs leading up into the sinuses. They can be inflamed which leads to turbinate hypertrophy.

In brief: Swollen turbinates

Turbinates are shelf-like projections in the nose; like turbines, they move the air through the nose slower, allowing it to be moistened, warmed, and filtered.
Turbinates are bone covered by tissue that "grows" or swells in response to allergies or irritants. The tissue sometimes gets so swollen & scarred that it blocks the nose and prevents air from passing, requiring surgical reduction.
