In brief: Anxiety is unconscio

Anxiety and fear are often used interchangeably.
However in psychoanalytic terms anxiety is an unconscious defense used to keep separate the ideation from symptoms. The symptoms break through the defenses and are experienced the same as fear. The difference is that with fear what is causing the symptoms is known to the individual whereas with anxiety the cause is still unaware to the person.
