In brief: Pus Removal!

The abscess (pus pocket) is localized with ultrasound scanning (us).
The area over the abscess is cleansed and local anesthesia placed. A needle or sometimes a catheter is inserted into the abscess while watching with the us. Pus is sent for culture studies. The needle is removed. A catheter may be left in place for days or longer and allowed to drain. Less invasive than surgical drainage.
