In brief: Define perminent!

The complexity of the surgery for anal defects varies with the defect.
If it is a short pull thru and the sphincter muscles can be preserved a favorable outcome with a single procedure may be possible. A complex repair with take down of a fistula and complications may need modifiations over time. Some kids may never have control as they grow older. Each case has unique issues.

In brief: Yes

Patients who have imperforate anus may sometimes require a colostomy for a short time however the operation to construct an anal opening is permanent.

In brief: Yes

Imperforate anus is a complex malformation of the anus.
It requires a stepwise approach with an initial colostomy. A pullthrough procedure places the rectum through the sphincter muscle complex. Once this is healed the colostomy is reversed or closed. Incontinence is affected by how high the rectum is located. The lower the better function is after surgery.
