My child has a chronic cough with no other symptoms, what could this be?

In brief: Depends ...

For children who cough mostly at night, especially if they cough hard enough that they occasionally vomit, and children who cough at night and spend the first hour in the morning after waking up doing "throat clearing" and coughing to clear: I am very suspicious of ger as a factor. Gastro-esophageal reflux.
In my practice, i often don't test, but treat them. If they improve, i confirm my diagnosis.

Food allergies may be a contributor. I have had several chronic coughs clear with craniosacral therapy. When you have coughed for a while you get "out of alignment" and I have had more than one patient have improvement after a craniosacral session.Chiropractic care can also help. Looking at other possibilities like GER or reactive airway disease, which has an allergic component, can also help.

In brief: Asthma

Children with a chronic cough should be evaluated for asthma, which is the most common cause.
However, often other etiologies need to be ruled out, such as allergies, pneumonia, aspiration events.
