If the Adjustment disorder with anxiety is severe enough, I have prescribed benzodiazepines to prevent the pain of the anxiety and maintain home and work functioning.
Dr. Dov Finman
The anxiety would probably be of an acute nature.

In brief: Can cause problems

Xanax (alprazolam) is a potent benzodiazapine related to valium.
It has the highest rate of dependency among these types of medications. Although initially it can seem to produce quick relief, the benefit may wear off, causing the need for higher doses. There are many other drugs, especially antidepressants, much better suited to helping, if medicaitons are needed at all.

In brief: Not the first choice

Adjustment disorder should be addressed with counseling, behavior modification etc if anxiolytics (sedatives) are needed then Buspar (buspirone) is good choice as benadryyl as well as these are sedating and non addicting.
