In brief: No Connection

There is no association between schizophrenia and childhood trauma.
However, trauma and abuse can be related to the later development of various emotional problems.

That used to be the prevailing theory.

In brief: No, but.

Although abuse is not a cause of schizophrenia, there is fascinating research that shows that helping families to reduce the level of emotionality in living with someone with schizophrenia can greatly improve their longterm outcome, including decreased need for medications and few hospitalizations.

In brief: Not the cause

Schizophrenia appears not to be caused by abuse.
However, some parents become overwhelmed by the early symptoms of schizophrenia and make matters worse by abusing the child in response to those symptoms.
