In brief: No

With beta thalassemia trait alone, no hemoglobin s should be detected.
If hemoglobin s is being detected in addition to beta thalassemia trait then the patient has a form of sickle cell beta thalassemia disease.

In brief: Only if sickle gene

If a person has beta thalassemia trait, but does not also have the sickle cell mutation, then he will not have hemoglobin s.
If he has both sickle trait and beta thalassemia trait, then he will have hemoglobin s (the majority of his hemoglobin is s, so he will have sickle cell disease symptoms).

In brief: Not typically

If someone truly just has beta thalassemia trait, then there should be no hemoglobin s present on the test.
Only those with sickle trait, sickle cell disease, or who have had a recent blood transfusion (within the past 120 days, typically) that happened to come from someone with sickle trait will have elevated hemoglobin s levels.
