In brief: Yes, not most

Respiratory distress syndrome (rds), or hyaline membrane disease, predominantly a disease of prematurely born infants, can be fatal.
However, the mortality rates associated with this condition have declined over the years and in 2007 about 735 children died in the us from rds or 17 deaths/100, 000 live births.

In brief: Yes

Rds occurs in infants who have not developed the mechanisms necessary for air exchange thru the lungs after birth.
It is more common in premi's but occasionally occurs in full term babies.Before the mid 70's there was little we could do.Now fatal outcome iis much less likely caused by the rds but due to non-lung related complications.
