Are babies born with a broken collar bone in a significant amount of pain?

No. Based on experience with both infants and older children with fracture clavicles, the fracture per se does not appear particularly painful, unless the arm is manipulated. That is why stabilizing the arm is an important step in managing this condition, which generally heals itself within a few weeks.
Maybe, maybe not. I've had many that didn't seem to mind at all unless you touched the area & some that seemed to fuss a lot. Given that some newborns are like that with or without a fx clavicle, it's hard to say if it really matters to most. I've never had one tell me.

Clavicle fracture. The clavicle is the term for the collarbone. It is a very common bone to fracture and usually does not need surgery unless there is significant displacement. Depends. If she broke the bone from a fall and the xray only showed a fracture, then likely no. If if broke on its own or with little trauma there may be bone loss from age or other causes. You can sometimes have bones break easily if there is an underlying tumor called a pathologic fracture. This would not be the most common thing. Read more...

Had nail put in for broken collar bone and had hernia repair with mesh as child, cardiologist said MRI would be fine with these?

Cosult radiologist. It is my understanding that any metal, including hardware, screws, metal mesh, staples, etc. Are all contraindications to an mri. You may want to inquire as to wether a ct scan would be safer, and provide the information regards your current condition that is being investigated. Read more...
Probably OK. Any metal strongly anchored into bone should not move, but could make artifacts if close to the area imaged. Mesh is probably ok as well. Please bring specific details (paperwork from the surgeries), if possible, to allow for safety checking before the MRI scan. Read more...
