Internal Medicine
In brief: Generally safe
Ercp (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is used to diagnose problems w biliary tract & associated organs (liver, gallbladder, &pancreas).
Under sedation a thin fiberoptic camera is threaded down the mouth to duodenum. Complications usually mild but can include pancreatitis(inflammation of pancreas), bleed, infection, perforation. Pretty safe overall; done when benefits outweigh risks.
