1 doctor agrees

In brief: Anyone with a heart

Heart surgery of any type is designed to relieve symptoms, prolong life.
No surgeon is going to operate on a patient who doesn't need it.

In brief: Open heart surgery

More correctly "open chest surgery".
Many procedures can now be done without opening the chest. Common reasons/benefits: bypass for blockage of the heart arteries, valve replacement for either narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (insufficiency), correction of congenital abnormalities, closure of abnormal openings between heart chambers etc..
