In brief: Same as adult
Any valve (heart, vein) prevents blood from flowing in the wrong direction.
So when you heart muscle contracts, the blood can only move forward if the valve is not leaking. Age has nothing to do with it.

In brief: Pumping blood
The heart is a pump, it is made up of four chambers.
The mitral valve is located on the left side of the heart between the left atrium (left top chamber) and left ventricle (left lower). For the heart to pump effectively, the valve open to move the blood from the top chamber to the lower chamber, then it closes when the ventricle contract and send the blood to the body. Abn when it leaks or tight.
