How does someone have a heart transplant?

1 doctor agrees
In brief: Surgical
When there are proper indications of an absolutely failing heart on major medications, and perhaps with an lvad (left ventricular assist device )in place, a person will be considered and "listed".
The surgery requires heart lung machine support of the recipient while their heart is removed and the donor heart is sewn in place.

In brief: Propagation of life
A heart transplant is a gift of life -- it is the last resort measure -- it is a rarity and difficult to obtain -- and it is difficult to care for -- the recipient will need frequent evaluation and many meds after a heart transplant - a serious commitment.
