In brief: Somewhat
Various measures to protect the heart muscle have been developed such as cooling the heart during surgery.
Also some surgeons do a bypass procedure without using the heart lung machine, another attempt to protect the muscle. There has not been proof that doing the surgery "off pump" improves survival or shortens recovery. That said, about 20% of bypasses are done off pump. So yes is the answer.

In brief: Yes
Surgical techniques in cardiac surgery have evolved over the years.
However, overall, improved non-surgical techniques have made recovery from heart procedures even easier.
