In brief: Mono
Everyone is different.
Some people get cancer while others don't. Some people get more severe colds than other people.

Pediatrics
In brief: It's viral
Neat experiments showed that most people had acute ebstein-barr infections (the offical name for mono) by the time they're 4 years old.
So the few who don't, get mono later. Mono virus sometimes causes "clinical" infections - ones that have symptoms, and sometimes result in "subclinical" infections that don't have any obvious symptoms. Both kinds can lead to immunity so you don't get it again.
