Is it dangerous to just use formula instead of breast feeding?

In brief: No

While breastfeeding is the preferred method of infant feeding, we are fortunate to have a variety of safe and effective approved infant formulas that can be used when necessary.
Some infants require specialized formula because they have rare conditions that impede absorption of nutrients and growth. Your pediatrician is the best source of information about infant feeding.

Is it dangerous? Probably not, but it sure isn't the best thing for your baby. (assuming those rare conditions are not present). Do a google search of: Advantages of Breastfeeding and you can see a long list of conditions that are typically worse if breastfeeding does not occur. Pediatricians can help, but so can lactation consultants and knowledgeable family doctors who practice obstetrics.

In brief: Usually not

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months if at all possible.
However, there are reasons why some babies may need to receive formula. Formula is not dangerous if it is mixed properly, according to the directions- which should be followed exactly- no diluting! and a sanitary water supply is used.

In brief: Depends on the area

There are a variety of reasons that a mother may not breast feed & if so, formulas offer a reasonable alternative.
Yet they are a terrable choice if sanitary water supplies are not readily available, in that situation breast is the safest choice.Formulas cannot provide immune factors & some babies have intolerance to their protein or sugar source. Properly prepaired, it is a healthy product.

Breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby for many reasons.
But there are times when a mother cannot breastfeed, and she should not feel guilty for using formula, as long as sanitary conditions are maintained. There are many alternative that meet various needs of the babies, and while they are not the first choice we recommend, they are not dangerous.
