I've heard nubain is a good alternative to an epidural for managing pain in labor. What's the difference?

In brief: Labor pain control

Nubain is a semi synthetic opiate that can be used for pain control.
When a woman is pregnant, opiodes given systemically (oral, intravenous or intramuscular) in such doses that can cross the placenta to the fetus and cause decreased awakening, respiratory compromise at birth and with nobaine, may affect fetal monitoring. All these side effects with epidural are way less and pain better controlled.

In brief: Less denser block

Nubain is a medication that can help ease labor pain.
It will not affect your muscle tone. It can cause some breathing issues for the baby if it is given right before the baby is born. For this reason these kinds of medications are not given when delivery of the baby is close.
