In brief: Deal with the cause

Have your thryoid hormones checked.
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, including prunes...Especially prunes. Do not eat any processed food. Cook all your own food from scratch. Drink lots of water. Take one tablespoon of mineral oil twice a day.

In brief: Yes

Increase your water and fluid intake.
You can also take MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) which is over the counter which will make stools softer and less likely to cause pain.
