In brief: symptomatic sunburn

Sunburn is caused by radiation injuring the skin which causes inflammation.
The blisters are actually fluid leaking from injured tissues that stay below the skin. Tricks to reducing the symptoms are to take anti-inflammation medicines like Motrin and advil, (ibuprofen) and minimizing any trauma to the skin. There are good over-the-counter products with Benzocaine that reduce the pain temporarily.
