Hello. . Hello. I am not sure why you are short of breath. If you have been smoking for a long time and the quit or significantly cut down on use, that can lead to coughing up mucus and that can cause some shortness of breath. What is usually happening is that toxins in cigarettes paralyzed the motile hairs (cilia) in the respiratory system. Those cilia move bacteria, viruses, dead cells and debris out of your system. If the amount of toxins is reduced, the cilia may be motile again. This would provide a tempoary increase in pulmonary symptoms. If this is the case, stay very well hydrated, to help keep the mucus moist.
