In brief: To get treatment

Bleeding disorders can be devastating and deadly.
It is very important to know you have one and get the proper treatment right away.

In brief: Prevention

If you have an undiagnosed bleeding disorder, you might go into a surgery or a delivery unprepared.
Blood loss in those situations could be life-threatening. If you are known to have a bleeding disorder, your surgeon or obstetrician will be prepared with the proper treatments to give you before or during surgery. You may also be better able to control menstrual blood loss and prevent anemia.

Hypercoagulable disorders(too much clotting) are also important to know about prior to surgery, medical interventions and even airplane flight or long periods of immobility. These can be treated either prospectively or after medical intervention and can be life saving if they prevent deep venous thromboses (large blood clots) and pulmonary emboli (blood clots going to the heart and lungs).
