The great majority of patients go to the ICU after lung transplant.
Even when all goes well there is still a significant risk of bleeding, early infection and early rejection in the first week after transplant. Also many patients may need to be weaned off of a ventilator or high oxygen amounts in the first 24 hours after the transplant has occurred.
