In brief: Trial and Error

Having a relationship with a doctor can take work.
Not all doctor-patient relationship work. Ask to see one if your doctor's partners, or even ask for a referral to another practice if you can't get your doctor to listen to you.

In brief: Look

Look for a physician with a hospital affiliation, preferrably an anesthesiologist or physical medicine and rehabilitation boar cerctificate who also has a sub-certification in pain medicine.
Hospital affiliation guarantees that the physician undergoes a periodic, on-going peer-review process (evaluation by other physicians in her/his specialty). Can call your local hospital or medical association for list of such physicians.
