In brief: Diabetes

Diabetes causes the blood sugar to be high.
In the long run, elevated blood sugar causes the blockage of arteries. Arterial blockage, in turn, causes kidney failure, strokes, heart attacks, and compromise of the extremities. Diabetics who ignore their problem usually wind up blind, on dialysis, and with amputations of their legs. Alcohol has a lot of sugar in it, so drinking will raise blood sugar even higher than it would otherwise be. Smoking is as toxic to the blood vessels as diabetes, so a smoker with uncontrolled diabetes is even more likely to wind up with the complications listed above than a smoker without diabetes or a diabetic who doesn't smoke. A diabetic who manages his disease and controls his risk factors can live a fairly normal life. One who does not could very well be dead before the age of 50.
