Obstetrics & Gynecology
In brief: Yes
Yes, Metronidazole (flagyl) is safe and it is the preferred treatment for bacterial vaginosis (bv) while pregnant.
Years ago, lab studies suggested that Flagyl could cause genetic mutations. However, this has not been shown to be in true in living, breathing humans. Flagyl is also acceptable while breast feeding.

Preventive Medicine
In brief: Yes
Although there are no official studies for "flagyl" in pregnancy, millions of pregnant women have been prescribed this medication for bacterial vaginosis (bv) or trichomonas ("trich") infections without complication.
More importantly, BV in pregnancy has been linked to premature rupture of membranes, so treatment with Metronidazole during pregnancy is crucial.
