In brief: For

For the most part, lesser toe (that is, not the big, or great, toe) fractures heal on their own.
A doctor would help with x-rays and supportive measures, such as a hard-soled shoe or buddy taping the toes together. However, a fracture with a puncture of the skin can get infected, and a poorly aligned toe can get in the way, particularly with certain types of shoes. Fractures of the great toe should always be evaluated by an orthopaedic or foot surgeon. If the fracture is at all suspicious, you should get it evaluated.

In brief: The

The degree of pain will really tell you what you should do.
Based on your description you have a fourth toe injury. Most of these injuries are closed meaning they don’t have a puncture wound. If you have a puncture wound have this evaluated immediately. Otherwise buddy tapping will give you a lot of relief. Apply some cotton between the third and fourth toes. The great toe is #1, small toe is #5. Apply a coban dressing around the 2 toes. Do not use regular tape, that will cause blistering and breakdown of the skin. Considering visiting an orthopedic surgeon if your pain is debilitating, pain worsens, you do not feel comfortable managing the dressing, have open wounds or develop blistering. Good luck.
