While no one can "prescribe" herbal remedies that are not FDA approved, we can make recommendations as to what may or may not help depending on existing scientific evidence and clinical experience

There are many studies available mainly in Europe, that are evidence based. Also there are citations in NIH, Pubmed, medline. All reputable sites. Also the FDA largely approves drugs based on information provided by the drug companies who MAKE the drugs. Case in point, FDa approved dronedarone. It is now very clear it causes severe hepatic damage.Same with Darvocet, Meridia, Accutane etc, etc

In brief: Often
If we are totally satisfied with their safety, yes.
But we also need to believe that they may help as most products have no scientific proof of effectiveness.

No you can't. Write a prescription for goldenseal, and the pharmacist will toss it in the trash. You can recommend herbs, but you can't prescribe.
In brief: Yes
We do it all the time: chamomile tea, fennel tea, etc.
Would we ever use them for a disease that needs real medicine? Certainly not!

First, if it helps with the problem, it's real medicine. Second, we never prescribe these substances. We recommend them.

In brief: No
Doctors prescribe medicines that are regulated by the fda and require prescriptions.
Doctors can, however, *recommend* herbal remedies if they are comfortable with and knowledgeable about them.
