If I pass out from drinking too much, is this the same as a short coma?

In brief: Depends
Most people who "pass out" from drinking are asleep.
They can be awakened with a loud noise, or shaking them, but they will fall back to sleep. Officially, this is called "stupor." coma is when you don't wake up with any kind of stimulation, even painful ones. In people who drink beyond stupor, they can achieve alcohol poisoning with coma and death. This happens mostly when people chug liquor.

In brief: Pretty much.
And also very dangerous - one of the things that passes out is the part of your brain that protects your airway.
