Have there been any recent major advances in abdominoplasty? Looked into getting a tummy tuck a few years ago, but could not swing it. Just wondering if there are any new modifications to procedures that reduce scarring or recovery time. Thanks for your

In brief: Seek Consultation.

Difficult to give you an accurate answer given that I do not know what you were told in the past.
Although the tummy tuck operation does involve significant physical and emotional “recovery”, “new additions” such as pain pumps may be helpful. Best to seek consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons for precise advice and information.

In brief: Advances in tummytuc

The major issues with tummy tucks (witch hazel) were the seroma/hematoma formation and pain if fascial/muscle plication was performed.
The first issue is now addressed by tisseel spray or quilting sutures while the pain is minimized by pain pumps or nerve blocks. Patients are rehabilitating faster with less morbidity nowadays. Newer sutures also help in better wound closure.

The latest and greatest is exaprel which provides pain relief for the 1st 3 days after surgery which typically is the most difficult period after a tummy tuck.

In brief: Not really

Things are constantly evolving, but there are no new "break throughs.

In brief: The latest thing:

Use of the intra-operative tap block to reduce post-operative discomfort.
This is a nerve block that "numbs up" the abdominal wall, so your first couple of days post op are much more comfortable.

In brief: Yes

The principle is the same but there could be some variations based on each individual.
It all depends on your physical exam and the preference of your plastic surgeon.

In brief: Normal

Normal people: instead of just doing surgery on the front of the body and killing all the blood vessels, surgeons now are considering removing all excess fat around the whole body and they are still able to remove and tighten skin in the front.
Because there is more blood flow, healing is faster and risk of infection or skin separation is less. If the above is done along with tumescent anesthesia, blood loss can be minimal and patient can return to work in 5-10 days. We have seen patients return to work after 2 days after 2 liters of fat removal, 6 inches of skin removal, and belly button reconstruction. Better results and faster recovery.

In brief: There

There are soem new therapies for scars and also recovery depends on what actually needs to be doen.
If it is only skin you should be up and about in no time. What causes the most discomfort is when you have to tighten the muscles or plicate the muscles but we now do all of these as an outpatient.
