In brief: Many options!

Depending on the specific shape of the nose and location of the problem, there are three basic options for changing the nose's shape.
1. The native bone or cartilage can be repositioned and reshaped. 2. Grafts of native tissue can be used to augment or suport the existing nose. 3. Artificial grafts/materials can be used if native grafts are not appropriate/available.

In brief: Changes under skin

Changes in the cartilage and bones under the skin are what changes the shape and function of the nose after rhinoplasty.

In brief: Individual specific

Every nose is different, and each patient's wishes are different.
The nose is initially assessed and the areas of concern are noted and discussed. Both bone and cartilage can be addressed with removal, augmentation, or reshaping/remodeling. Specific techniques are used for different desired changes. The most important thing to ensuring a successful surgery is to have reasonable expectations.

In brief: Rhinoplasty surgery

The nose is reshaped through careful cartilage repositioning, cartilage removal, bone repositioning and reducing the bone at the top of the nose.
Techniques vary from surgeon to surgeon so look at before and after pictures to get a good idea of what you like.

In brief: Nasal reshaping

Nose reshaping is accomplished via a variety of techniques that essentially address the cartilage and use sutures, cartilage grafts or incisions or rearrangement in order to accomplish tip alterations.
The nasal bridge is partially made of bone and bone reshaping can be achieved with a saw, chisel, burr, rasp, etc.

In brief: Shape the support

The key is to alter the underlying support for the skin.
Shaping the cartilaginous and/or boney framework changes the contour of the overlying skin.

Sometimes the septum inside the nose also has to be repaired to improve both the appearance and function of the nose!

In brief: Nose reshaping

A rhinoplasty is a complicated surgery with many parts.
You have to consider the framework (bone, cartilage, ligaments, septum) and the skin and soft tissue. In general, small changes lead to dramatic effects. The artistry involves shaping the nose that is right for every individual patient and accomplishes the surgeon's and patient's mutual goals.

In brief: Reshaping the nose

Very interesting question.
There are two ways to gain access to the nose, from the inside or from an incision on the outiside. Once access is gained there are only 5 structures you can shape: bone, upper lateral cartilages, lower lateral cartilages, septum and skin. The surgeon manipulates these structures to improve the three dimensional relationships of the nose. This is what i love about it.

In brief: Contouring

Re-shaping the nose during rhinoplasty may involve removing tissue from the dorsum (top) of the nose, narrowing the nose (often requires a controlled surgical fracture of the nasal bones), re-shaping the tip (via manipulation of the cartilage structures in this area), narrowing the base of the nose or adding tissue (e.
g. Cartilage) to different areas to enhance the shape.

In brief: Depends on problem

Rhinoplasty is a fun and fascinating surgery.
The technique for shaping depends entirely on what part of the nose needs changing and how you desire it to look afterwards. Cartilage can be added, removed, or reshaped. Bone can also be removed or reshaped, and grafts can be added to augment the bony nose if needed. Seek a experienced rhinoplasty surgeon for recommendations specific to you.
