In brief: Yes
If liposuction is performed too close to the skin, there is a risk of contour irregularity and disfigurement.
A good way to determine if your doctor is qualified to perform the procedure is to inquire as to whether or not they have privileges to perform liposuction in a hospital. If they are only performing this procedure in their office and are not credentialed to perform it in a hospital beware.

Many physicians have been performing liposuction because of the financial benefits, not because they have had appropriate residency training in plastic surgery. Seek a plastic surgeon who regularly performs liposuction in order to obtain the best results.

The above post are both controversial and inflammatory. The skills of plastic surgeons vary greatly. Other surgeon are quite qualified and get safe excellent result with liposuction. Some plastic surgeon are very safe but actually liposuction with some Plastic Surgeons have a worse safety record.

In brief: Liposuction risks
Any surgery has risks.
Liposuction can not be guaranteed to prevent all risks. There is a low chance of permanent irregularites from depressions adjacent to incompletely resected fat, temporary swellings such as seromas that need draining, but liposuction typically produces excellent fat reduction with very good contour. Indentations can be treated succesfully often, with fat injection grafting.

If not properly performed, permanent disfiguration can occur. Often it is the result of too aggressive liposuction (too much taken) or improper selection of the patient such as doing liposuction when there was already loose skin and tummy tuck was needed instead.
Certain types of ls like ultrasound or lasers can cause burns of the skin.

In brief: Absolutely
The results a patient gets with liposuction have more to do with the experience and talent of the person doing the procedure and the starting point of the patient - are they a good candidate or not? Pre-existing skin contour irregularities and loose skin are a recipe for disaster in the wrong hands and even under the best circumstances.
Properly selected patients can get fantastic results.

In brief: Yes and no
The procedure is only as good as the doctor performing it.
There are many doctors performing lipo after attending only a weekend course. It's important to ask the doctor where they got their training, how many cases they've done, if they've had complications, and to show you before and after photos. Liposuction really is an art and will only turn out well if the doctor has excellent technique.

Although disfiguerment what ever it means is a listed side effect of liposuction, but in all fairness most of the liposuctions done by experienced plastic surgeons do not cause any disfiguerment and are cosmetically with good results.

In brief: Absolutely!!
These days it seems everyone is trying their hand at liposuction after taking a weekend course.
Liposuction can be unforgiving, especially on a relatively thin person, so it is important to find an experienced well trained surgeon. Never let anyone practice with their new machine on you even if it is free! i see a lot of these patients and correction can be very difficult.

In brief: Yes but uncommon
Yes if done by a poorly trained doctor. You can be left with asymmetries, indentations, contour irregularities, bad scarring if the surgeon is inexperienced or incompetent, or just plain sloppy.
Some of these disfigurements can be reversed with fillers, fat transplantation, scar revision or lasers.

If you employ the corner butcher, you figure it out. :).

In brief: Rarely, but yes
An increasing amount of irregularities can occur with liposuction when a surgeon uses only large cannulas.
Small cannulas are used to fine tune results and will help the surface areas appear smoother.

In brief: Very rarely
Liposuction is typically a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted fat accumulations which are diet/exercise resistant.
Occasionally there are surface irregularities which may be a problem, but usually relatively easy to improve. Major deformities are extremely rare.
