In brief: Eat right & exercise
Start early by giving a wide variety of healthy foods to infants & toddlers.
Make snacks healthy (fruits & veggies, not chips). Exercise regularly as a family (bike rides, walks, swimming, ball games). Don't eat in front of the tv. Don't buy the unhealthy foods: if it's not in the house, the kids won't eat it. Eat as a family and try not to eat until stuffed (be a role model for the kids).

In brief: Healthy Habits
Simple in theory, harder in practice.
Lifestyle issues are the key. Healthy nutrition (types and amounts of food), fitness, rest (stress coping skills). Focus on health not on weight.

In brief: Be a good role model
Engage your whole family in healthy lifestyle activities- pack and picnic and go to the park, take family hikes and bike rides.
Spend time at the pool and outside (and not in the movie theater) during summer. Make grocery shopping for healthy foods fun by involving your kids in the shopping and cooking process. Make activity a part of the daily routine.

In brief: Exercise and Diet
Increasing and maintaining a good excercise routine is part.
Then implementing regular consistant portion control of food intake. If you limit portions by removing 1 tsp of every 5, of all foods, the child will generally do better with weight, no matter how old.
