In brief: Depends
The safety of genetically modified food depends upon the proteins or other substances produced by the transferred genetic material.
Transferred genetic material itself is generally not of concern. Concerns are raised when the modified food contain substances significantly different in quality and quantity than counterpart substances in natural food.

Genetically modified foods can be dangerous. e.g. most soybeans now Gen. modified and carry a gene that can produce pesticide in the human G. I. tract. Best to avoid GM foods, esp. for kids.
