My child idolizes his older brother. Sometimes this is great, but sometimes a pain! how can we dial this down?

In brief: A possible approach

Ask your older son to help.
He can give compliments to your younger son when they are deserved. Your older one can coach his brother in activities in which your younger one idolizes him. Also encourage those interests your younger son has that are different from the older's. And you can remind your young one to show compassion for others who are not lucky enough to have such a great older brother.

In brief: Why interfere at all

It's natural for parents to anticipate the highs and lows their kids feel and want to buffer some of the down times.
You seem happy with some of this adoration. But your own feelings may reflect disapointments, separation, losses that you were told to iignore as a child. The greatest way for a child to grow emotionally is to be validated for true feelings. Feelings are never good or bad they just are.
