Is it normal to be afraid of a prostate exam?

Yes. Most men are a little anxious about having a prostate exam. It consists of the physician placing the index finger into the rectum to feel the prostate to assess for size, consistency, and nodules. This digital examination and a blood test called psa are screening tests employed to help detect prostate cancer.
Yes indeed! To be brave, act brave. Just before the finger goes in, push down like you're having a bowel movement. It won't hurt so much. It doesn't feel nice and the idea is yucky -- but it's a life-saver.
